A Whittle Bit of Commentary with Chad Whittle
Below is a rush transcript (may contain errors):
Welcome to the XFL! How many of you actually remember the XFL? If you don’t, I’m not surprised because it only last one season back in 2000, but WWE owner and creator of the XFL Vince McMahon is rumored to be getting back into the football game soon with a new league.
WrestlingNews.co, a website I never thought I’d quote on here, reports McMahon has trademarked the term UFL, United Football League, and has started a new venture apart from the WWE, called Alpha Entertainment that is assumed to be the company that would start this new league.
With many NFL fans disenfranchised from the league because of politics and player protests, there is a market for an NFL alternative. Especially right now with Trump in office, there is an audience for it. If he goes full red, white and blue with it, make it patriotic, appeal to Trump supporters and the right, this league could become the Fox News football alternative to the NFL. I would even play up that it’s “America’s League” and make it clear they support the flag, the troops and that they’ll be no protest, it could be a hit because the football fans boycotting the NFL, they miss football, and they’d be happy to check out a league that is pro-America.
If he started this league now, it has a better chance at success than the XFL because today he doesn’t have to worry about getting a big broadcast or cable TV contract. He can go straight to the consumer with an OTT app. He already owns a streaming service for the WWE, he could broadcast games there or start a new app, or stream live on Hulu or YouTube.
Now I’m not saying this league could or would replace the NFL if he actually starts it, I’m just saying it could be an alternative and fill a niche. The Arena Football League still exists, and it’s not a massive competitor to the NFL, but it works, and this could too.
An announcement about the new league could come as early as January, so 2018 is already shaping up to be an interesting year.
