Has Thanksgiving Lost Its Spiritual Significance and Real Meaning? 11/27/17 - A Whittle Bit of Commentary

A Whittle Bit of Commentary with Chad Whittle

Below is a rush transcript (may contain errors):

If you’re listening to this then it means you survived Black Friday.

It’s Monday, and after reading the headlines from Black Friday, I’ve wondered to myself if Thanksgiving has lost all of its meaning in society.

Have we forgotten what this holiday is really all about?

Oh sure, we all know the story, where the Pilgrims gave thanks and how George Washington proclaimed a day of Thanksgiving, but how many of us actually take the time to sit down and actually count our blessings other than just saying that we are blessed?

How many of us slow down on Thanksgiving to spend time with God? Or, are we so busy trying to have dinner prepared so we can all eat and then go act like devils after pretending to be angels all day as we head off to Black Friday sales as many of us yell, scream, and in some cases embarrass ourselves in public by getting into fights over discounted TVs and laptops?

I’m all for sales and capitalism, but to me, as with Christmas and other holidays, Thanksgiving has lost its real meaning, and has lost its spiritual significance and has been replaced by secular culture.
