A Whittle Bit of Commentary with Chad Whittle
Below is a rush transcript (may contain errors):
The innovator of trash TV, Jerry Springer, has finally had his show cancelled after more than 4,000 episodes of garbage.
NBC has announced they have stopped production of “The Jerry Springer Show” that has aired since 1991 but reruns will live on for at least the next 2-3 years on The CW.
The Springer show has no redeeming qualities and has never provided anything positive to the American pop culture, but instead it paved the way for the trash that airs on TV now and in some ways is the forerunner to reality TV because his show provided Hollywood evidence that a large amount of the public would be willing to watch reality TV shows that show people yelling, screaming and committing all kinds of indecent acts all for a chance at 15 minutes of television fame.
The ending of the Springer show isn’t the end of the trash TV genre, it’s only the conclusion of one chapter of it, with many more chapters to come that will be an even bigger pile of trash than his show.
